| The Pitkali Markets Centre at Ta’ Qali
is a centralised marketing complex where farmers deposit their
agricultural produce for sale to licenced hawkers through
middlemen (Pitkali).
The complex consists of three large sheds, a crates washing
station and an Administration Block. Two sheds accommodate
seventeen stalls, each one known as ‘pitkalija’.
These stalls are administered by private ‘pitkali’
(middlemen). The third shed is administered by the Farmers
Centralised Co-Op Society.
Farmers are at liberty to deposit their produce at any ‘pitkalija’,
however, only members of the FCCS may utilise the facilities
and benefits offered by the Co-Op.
The setting up of the Agricultural Marketing Centre was mainly
intended to help farmers obtain the best possible prices for
their produce. The products are sold by public auction by
‘pitkala’ to licenced hawkers. The Pitkali Marketing
Centre is open Monday through Friday, Monday and Thursday
being the busiest days of the week.
The Marketing of Agricultural Produce Regulations falling
under subsidiary legislations 117.04, 117.20 control the role
of the Pitkali Centre.
