The Maltese Wine Forum
Sharing the Experience
Date: 31/05/2005
The importance of the Maltese wine industry, the new wine legislation and the proposed DOK system for Maltese wine were some of the issues discussed during the Maltese Wine Forum held today at the Hilton’s Portomaso Suite. The event was hosted by The Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment with the participation of Camilleri Wines, Emmanuel Delicata and Marsovin wineries.
The Forum was introduced by the President of the MHRA, Justin Zammit Tabona followed by an address about Government’s recognition on the importance of Maltese wine by Randall Caruana from the Ministry’s Viticulture and Oenology Unit. The morning continued with a presentation about the local wine industry by three of Malta’s wine producers, Camilleri Wines, Emmanuel Delicata and Marsovin. Shaun McCarthy, general manager of Corinthia San Ġorġ and Marina Resort then gave a brief outline on the importance of local wine in a local market. This was followed by an illustration of the enforcement of new wine legislation by Geroge Carbone, DG Agricultural Services and Rural Development Division and Ms Claudette Gambin from the Viticulture & Oenology Unit.
The second half of the Forum was opened by the restaurateur Walter Cassar who spoke about the benefits of selling Maltese wine, followed by a presentation about the proposed DOK system by Randall Caruana. The Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Rural Affairs and the Environment, Dr Francis Agius, brought the forum to an end with his address on Government recognition of the importance of the Maltese wine industry and viticulture.
A tutored wine tasting followed the morning forum. The guests were then treated to a lavish four course meal that was specifically prepared as a continuation of the tutored wine tasting session held earlier. During the meal the guests enjoyed an impressive selection of fine Maltese wines and learnt how the palate is further enhanced when wines are carefully chosen to blend perfectly with the dishes offered.
