| Q Do I have to apply for a vintner’s
licence to produce wine for my own consumption?
A Under the new Wine Act, which has come into force on 21st
June 2002, what was known as the private licence has now been
terminated. Any winemaker who puts up his wine for sale must
apply for a commercial licence on a yearly basis. This licence
of Lm 20 must be obtained and renewed irrelevant of the volumes
of wine being produced. This licence must be paid at the Viticulture
& Oenology Unit at the Agricultural Research and Development
Centre at Ghammieri.
Q Which varieties qualify for the scheme for financial
aid on viticulture?
A The Ministry has initiated two schemes to develop viticulture
(Grape growing) in the Malta and Gozo. The financial assistance
of Lm 45 per tumolo per year is given to grape growers who
cultivate vines for table grapes and wine grapes. Such growers
are to apply on the appropriate form each year at the nearest
extension service.
The second scheme offers a maximum of Lm 450 per tumolo to
farmers who want to plant wine grapes in their fields using
modern viticultural techniques. Farmers must fill in the appropriate
form and should forward a copy of all receipts as proof of
the expenditures incurred. This financial aid is subject to
regulations issued by the Viticulture & Oenology Unit.
